Does Responsive Design Benefit SEO?

Recording a staggering 55 percent hike in the Smartphone subscriptions in 2012, responsive web design has the latent possibility to be the future.

The concept is in creating web pages with attributes that enable configuring within the available browser dimensions. The shape, size and place elements determine the screen size with CSS media queries. For example, Microsoft, Corp. (www.microsoft.com) uses a responsive website design. Unlike the mobile websites that fail to operate with so much content and thereby eliminates them, the responsive web design keeps all its content. The mobile website has a different navigation, but with a responsive website design, the web page can be optimized between PC and mobile seamlessly.

Is Responsive Design Appropriate for SEO?

We can safely deduce that responsive website design eradicates concerns like the external web maintenance and content creation. However, does this really help in SEO?

Usability factor

Major search engine algorithms like Google are fixed to send the visitor to the website that they require. Whenever, a customer returns to the result’s page from any website, the search engines make a note. It infers the incapability of the website in addressing the needs of the viewer.

In case of mobile websites, the visitor may get frustrated because of the lesser content or different navigation than that of the desktop website. Even if no mobile website exists, records have shown that more than 61 percent of the audience returns to search results for a more readable site. In both these situations, bounce rates can increase, affecting the overall page rank. With a responsive website design, the viewers can view the content in their desired format.

Improved Ranking

The search engine giant, Google had announced that it ranks the websites optimized for mobile higher in the mobile search results. The company itself endorses responsive website design, which means that the site responsively designed would rank in mobile search results also.

Link Building

In responsive, the links to the mobile and the main website is the same. The mobile websites on the other hand will be new, with more competition and significantly fewer back-links. The responsive design back-links to the original website and this gives a competitive edge. With the increase in mobile usage, the back-links from both desktop and mobile combine to form a stronger profile.

Duplicate content issue

Google Panda does not affect the mobile website, which has similar content as that of the desktop version. However, if same content is available in two places, it can be frustrating with target viewers coming to the wrong version of the website. With the responsive design, the content stays in the same place with no issue of duplicity.

From all we these, we can safely surmise that with responsive website design, there is a decrease on bounce rate and increase in search volume. Responsive website design does have its flaws, however, with its advantages it is important to make the switch as soon as possible. It would prepare the website for the future and give it a competitive edge.
